Anggrita Yusanti, Maratua team batch 3

Such a memorable of having amazing experiences in joining Student’s Research and Development Team (SR&DT) SIDI. Being a part of the research team was beyond my expectation. I was so grateful when i heard my name was a part of SR&DT Maratua, because no ordinary college students in ITS could experience this golden chance. As the research about Maratua goes by in a year, i learned lots of new things that i barely got from my formal college class. It was truly amzing to get a chance to visit Maratua, an exqusite island which instantly making me speechless to describe how beautiful the island is. And also we got to know the complexity livelihood  of Maratua’s local people, so that we can give some useful research idea for them and the government. Last but not least, my biggest gratitude for professors from SIDI Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember and professors from Wismar University, whom guided our team to reach it’s final research and giving us chance to present it at local and international seminars. In my opinion, join the SR&DT program is a perfect place for ITS college students to gain hardskill and softskill experience. The benefits from joining the research is not be kept to ourselfs, but also for Indonesia in the future, especially Maratua Island.

Created on Tuesday, 27 September 2016

SIDI Week September ended with a trip to Mount Bromo and shipyards that produce boats using fiber materials. The trip to Mount Bromo began at 18:00 from the Department of Naval Architecture Institute of Technology. Stopped for having dinner at  Tempo Doloes restaurant and the journey continued to the hotel where we would take a rest. We arrived at the hotel at 00:30 am, the location of our hotel was in the Bromo area because thatt the air temperature was cold. Bromo temperature range in the dry season is 5-6 degrees Celsius, but during the rainy season temperatures will be a little warmer. Watching the sunrise is kind of beautiful moment for the tourists when visiting Mount Bromo and it's not a secret that the beauty of Mount Bromo is one of the loveliest Montain in the world.

Sunrise can be seen starting at 4:00 to 4:30 am, and trip from the hotel to the place where we could see the sunrise took about 30 minutes trip by Jeep. We must awake after a short break to leave for Pananjakan by

Maratua Island, an exquisite small island with beautiful beaches and also magnificent underwater scenery that would make everyone falls in love with. Located in East Borneo Province, Maratua is the part of Derawan Island Coastal Parks (Taman Kepulauan Pulau Derawan). Today, Maratua has become a leading tourism destination in Borneo and even in Indonesia. To reach Maratua Island, tourist could travel using speed boat from Tanjung Redeb Port, or Tanjung Batu Port in Berau.

Our stories in Maratua started with the ride on a speed boat from Tanjung Redeb Port. We were very lucky since the weather at the moment was very friendly. It was sunny day with warm sunlight and calm waves all along our journey. Before arriving in Maratua, we decided to look around to other small islands. We visited Derawan, Sangalaki and Kakaban Island to enjoy some sceneries. And finally, after hours of cruise, we arrived in a pretty small island called Maratua.

Third Visiting SR&DT to Poteran Island, September 2015

Created on Friday, 25 September 2015

On September 20th, 2015, SR&DT Batch 2 Poteran went to visit Sumenep and Poteran island for the third time. This time, the team visited the carrageenan cluster factory located in Sumenep, Moringa local industry in Bluto, and Moringa field (Group Two of farmers’ land).

Carrageenan Cluster Factory Feasibility Study

The carrageenan cluster factory is organized by the local government and that factory hasn’t been operated since 2012. The team aimed to do a feasibility analysis on operating the factory because the price of processed-seaweed in the form of carrageenan is higher (up to IDR 1 million / 100 g). Inside the factory, there are office, warehouse, boiler room, pump house, processing room and waste treatment facility. The engineering division of the team checked the machines performance inside the processing and boiler room as well as the pump house. The only machine which could be operated was humidifier. The other machines such as crusher, pressing, and air compressor machines were in good conditions but there was no sufficient electrical supply to operate them. The factory was actually ready for operation however there needed to be some renovations of the building as well as electrical supply.

Moringa Local Industry

Peeling Moringa Leaves

Bluto is one of the well known as Moringa local industry which is able to produce 1 ton/ month. When we were visiting the place, we saw the traditional harvesting and peeling of Moringa leaves by a group of local workers.

The processes were not standardized at all, they weren’t hygiene and weren’t suitable for international standard. Therefore, the international SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) should be applied to meet the criteria export quality.

The renewable energy is a very important tool for the sustainability and the future developments on Teluk Alulu, Maratua Visit Day-2

Created on Wednesday, 22 July 2015

(13/05/2015) Teluk Alulu is one of the villages in Maratua Island. From Pabahan Island we can visit this village using small boat. After 30 minutes of boating, the boat arrived in a calm and windy village.

Due to the obvious hardships of being an isolated electrical system, Teluk Alulu (a village in remote island of Maratua), it is a challenge to provide stable and quality electricity service to a small island, or group of islands. Because of their small size, this village often relies on fossil fuel power plants, most commonly diesel units, as these units are easily dispatched and reliable. However, the reliance on redundant distribution fuels for geographically isolated systems results in a higher cost for diesel more expensive when compared to mainland. The absence of self-reliance in such systems is an impoverishing factor that adds to the costs of insularity and diminishes the attractiveness of the
