Third Visiting SR&DT to Poteran Island, September 2015

Created on Friday, 25 September 2015

On September 20th, 2015, SR&DT Batch 2 Poteran went to visit Sumenep and Poteran island for the third time. This time, the team visited the carrageenan cluster factory located in Sumenep, Moringa local industry in Bluto, and Moringa field (Group Two of farmers’ land).

Carrageenan Cluster Factory Feasibility Study

The carrageenan cluster factory is organized by the local government and that factory hasn’t been operated since 2012. The team aimed to do a feasibility analysis on operating the factory because the price of processed-seaweed in the form of carrageenan is higher (up to IDR 1 million / 100 g). Inside the factory, there are office, warehouse, boiler room, pump house, processing room and waste treatment facility. The engineering division of the team checked the machines performance inside the processing and boiler room as well as the pump house. The only machine which could be operated was humidifier. The other machines such as crusher, pressing, and air compressor machines were in good conditions but there was no sufficient electrical supply to operate them. The factory was actually ready for operation however there needed to be some renovations of the building as well as electrical supply.

Moringa Local Industry

Peeling Moringa Leaves

Bluto is one of the well known as Moringa local industry which is able to produce 1 ton/ month. When we were visiting the place, we saw the traditional harvesting and peeling of Moringa leaves by a group of local workers.

The processes were not standardized at all, they weren’t hygiene and weren’t suitable for international standard. Therefore, the international SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) should be applied to meet the criteria export quality.

Moringa Field Visit

Measuring the Depth of the Well

Continuing from the second visit of mapping Group One of farmers’ land, the team went to cover the Group Two. They also determined the Water Tower point locations, depth of well, soil characterization test of percolation. The percolation examination was obtained to support the water supply and distribution data.
