SR&DT Profile

Students' Research & Development for Small Islands, also known as Students' Research & Development Team program (SR&DT) is an array of multidisciplinary research activities conducted by German and Indonesian students to address potentials and challenges faced by small islands. The activities are conducted by the students in a close collaboration with government, industry and university. This approach is viewed important, in order to deliver implementable concepts which should be beneficial for the society.

SR&DT program is granted by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to Wismar University of Applied Sciences, Germany, in cooperation with Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS), Surabaya, Indonesia. On site, SR&DT is organized by the Sustainable Island Development Initiatives (SIDI). SIDI itself is a part of the Marine Research Centre of ITS.

SR&DT program starts in 2013, shortly after the agreement between ITS and the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries on 10 November 2012 concerning the development of Maratua and Poteran islands. ITS obtains a mandate to adopt those islands to be developed in a sustainable way, to enhance wealth, to respect the culture of local people and to preserve the environment.
