Dibuat pada Kamis, 13 Oktober 2016

Sustainability seems to be a catching word phrase these days. It is an increasingly popular issue to be addressed. It is both necessary and challenging.

Secondly the nature of Indonesia with thousands of islands, we have not paid attention at their issues accordingly. We failed to elevate/highlight them proportionally. We, Sustainable Island Development Initiatives (SIDI) conduct an array of multidisciplinary research programs in collaboration with industry, government, and universities to contribute in addressing small island challenges in the hope to manifest it into wealth of the population in a sustainable way.

Student Research and Development Teams for Small Islands (SR & DT) is a research program between Wismar University of Applied Sciences and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) since 2013. Within this program two teams of students of various disciplines from Germany and Indonesia conduct a research on Maratua island (Berau, East Kalimantan) and Poteran island (Sumenep, East Java).

Maratua island is an island in Makassar Strait with huge marine diversity and very popular marine touristic destination. This island is surrounded by some 14 tiny islands where resorts heve been built and are in operations. The population in the main island Maratua face huge challenges in nearly all aspects of life, from energy, healthcare, education, environment till transportation.

Poteran island is located eastern off Sumenep district. The island has huge potential for moringa oliviera and seaweed cultivation and processing. The research is designed to help monitize the above potential through developing organic moringa oliviera and seaweed farming and processing complying international standards.

Objectives of Workshop

The purpose of Workshop is to diseminate the results of the research in the past three years. The goal is to highlight the importance of developing small islands in a sustainable way. The Workshop serves also as dialogue platform to raise the awareness and to elevate the small island issues to a new height.
