A Public Presentation at SIDI WEEK at the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya, Indonesia, 25 Feb, 2015. Organized by: Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) and Wismar University, Germany

Education is a big and profitable business, … if well-managed & smartly-marketed. Look how education business has grown and prospered, esp. in Asia and the USA, and those operating in cyber-space!

However, some people, especially government leaders, business executives & entrepreneurs, civil societies, educators, concerned parents, etc., in increasing number of countries, are debating whether the increasingly expensive costs education is a worth investment, and should be considered as a “public good” or a “capital investment” needed in a globally-competitive market in the context of a K-economy & society.

However, the more dominant questions arising from the above-mentioned issues, among others, are:

a. How should “high-quality” and “relevant” demand-driven and market-based education be financed, and by whom?

b. Is the rapidly increasing cost of education worth the “added-value” (in terms of the cost-effectiveness/efficiency) in increasing the “educated” person’s productivity, leverage and career success?

c. In view of the wide-spread democratization of education in many countries, how can “edupreneurs” help facilitate a more “demand-driven” & relevant curricula for the market/clients, and a fair financing strategies for narrowing of the knowledge-sharing benefits gap between the resource-rich vs. resource poor in a society?

The KeyNote Presentation will illustrate some trends which contribute to the proliferation and growth of education business in various countries, incl. their business strategies, clientele, and possible future directions. For instance, approaches in offering education services to segmented clients, global or international educational experience & brand-equity, “niche” & demand-driven competency development, etc. will be discussed.

More importantly, in this Presentation, interesting and innovative strategies and approaches in developing sustainable business models to help contribute to financing high-quality education in light of the above-mentioned issues will be shared. Challenges of the C-S-M (Cloud, SocialMedia, and Mobile) Technologies applications, esp. in the context of the increasing use of MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) and other e-learning platforms in blended-learning processes and the financial implications will also be discussed.

Efforts by some innovative Education Entrepreneurs (i.e., “EduPreneurs”), including strategies for “Robin Hood” financing and fund-raising, as well as piggybacking and/or leveraging OPM/OPR/OPN (i.e., Other People’s Money, Resources and/or Networks) will be illustrated in this KeyNote Presentation.
